What is Time Blocking?
Time blocking is a time management technique that involves dividing your day into designated “blocks” of time, each dedicated to specific tasks or activities. Rather than jumping between different to-dos throughout the day, you group similar tasks together and work on them within their allotted time slots.
This strategic approach to scheduling offers several key benefits:
- Increased Focus: By removing the constant context switching between tasks, you can enter a state of deep work and maximize your productivity within each time block.
- Reduced Decision Fatigue: When you’ve already decided what you’ll be working on during a given time, you eliminate the energy-draining process of deciding what to do next.
- Improved Time Management: Time blocking helps you be more intentional about how you’re spending your hours, ensuring you allocate sufficient time for your priorities.
While time blocking on its own is a highly effective time management strategy, the version I’m about to share with you takes it to the next level by infusing it with the blessings of your Islamic faith.
Introducing Baraka Time Blocking
Baraka time blocking is a unique approach that I’ve developed specifically for Muslim homeschooling moms like yourself. At its core, it’s the same time blocking principle, but with one crucial difference: your daily prayers are the foundation upon which your entire schedule is built.
Instead of trying to fit your prayers in around your never-ending to-do list, you’ll be structuring your day around your salah, ensuring that your connection with Allah remains the top priority. This small yet powerful shift is the key to unlocking true barakah (blessings) in your time and transforming your productivity.
Ready to get started? Let’s walk through the three steps of the Baraka Time Blocking system:
Step 1: Create Your Five Essential Time Blocks
The first step is to divide your day into five distinct time blocks. These blocks will serve as the foundation for your entire schedule, and they work equally well whether you have babies, toddlers, or older children.
The five time blocks are:
- Time with Allah: This is your personal worship time in the morning, before your kids wake up. Aim for at least 15 minutes of uninterrupted quiet to connect with your Creator through Quran reading, dhikr, or simply reflecting in gratitude.
- Morning: This block spans from when your kids wake up until lunchtime. This is the prime time for homeschooling lessons, Quran practice, and outdoor play.
- Quiet Time/Nap Time: Depending on the ages of your children, this 1-3 hour block in the early afternoon is dedicated to naps for the little ones or quiet independent activities for the older kids. This is also your time to recharge with a much-needed rest or self-care routine.
- Afternoon: From the end of quiet time until bedtime, this block is for extracurricular activities, family time, dinner prep, and bedtime routines.
- Nighttime: The final block of your day, from when the kids go to bed until you turn in, is for winding down, planning for the next day, and your own self-care rituals.
The exact start and end times for each block will vary based on your family’s unique schedule, but the key is to keep these five categories consistent. This structure will provide a solid foundation for the rest of your Baraka Time Blocking system.
Step 2: Anchor Your Day Around Your Prayers
With your five time blocks in place, the next step is to overlay your daily prayer times. This is the crucial element that transforms regular time blocking into the Baraka Time Blocking method.
In your planner or calendar, make a note of the exact times for each of the five daily prayers: Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha. Then, highlight or color-code these prayer times so they stand out clearly within your schedule.
By intentionally planning your day around your salah, you’re making your connection with Allah the central focus. Rather than trying to squeeze in your prayers amidst a hectic to-do list, you’re allowing your spiritual obligations to be the anchors that guide the flow of your entire day.
This small shift in mindset can have a profound impact, infusing your time with barakah and helping you approach each task with a deeper sense of purpose and presence.
Step 3: Fill in Your Other Tasks
With your prayer times locked in, the final step is to fill in the rest of your daily activities and responsibilities within the appropriate time blocks. The key here is to be strategic and intentional about how you allocate your time.
Rather than jumping between different tasks throughout the day, aim to group similar activities together within each time block. For example, you might dedicate your morning block solely to homeschooling, your afternoon block to household chores and errands, and your nighttime block to meal prep and self-care.
This focused approach helps you minimize distractions, enter a state of flow, and maximize your productivity. And by planning the night before, you can easily adjust your schedule to accommodate any last-minute changes or unexpected events that may arise.
Putting it All Together: A Day in the Life with Baraka Time Blocking
To bring this all to life, let’s walk through what a typical day might look like using the Baraka Time Blocking system:
Time with Allah
You wake up before the rest of your household to enjoy 30 minutes of uninterrupted quiet time. You read a few pages of the Quran, perform your morning dhikr, and reflect on your intentions for the day ahead.
Morning Block
As your children begin to stir, you transition into your morning time block. You do your kid’s morning routine, have breakfast, then dive into your homeschooling lessons. Your kids work independently on their Quran memorization and recitation while you supervise and provide guidance as needed. After a healthy, home-cooked lunch, you all head outside for some fresh air and physical activity or go straight to quiet time.
Quiet Time/Nap Time
As the afternoon rolls around, your younger children settle down for their naps while your older ones engage in quiet, independent activities. You use this precious time to rest, recharge, and perhaps even squeeze in a short workout or a few chapters of a book you’ve been meaning to read.
Afternoon (3:00 PM – 7:00 PM)
As your kids wake up from their rest, you transition into the afternoon block. Your children attend their extracurricular activities, such as sports or programs, while you focus on preparing a nutritious dinner for the family. You gather everyone together for Maghrib prayer, followed by quality time spent playing games, reading stories, or simply enjoying each other’s company.
Nighttime
After your children have been tucked into bed, you enter the final time block of the day. You perform your Isha prayer, then take some time to tidy up the house, plan for the next day, and engage in your own self-care routine. Perhaps you indulge in a soothing cup of tea, catch up on your favorite podcast, or simply sit in quiet reflection before heading to bed yourself.
Unlock the Blessings of Your Time with Baraka Time Blocking
By prioritizing your prayers, organizing your time intentionally, and focusing on one task at a time, the Baraka Time Blocking system empowers you to find harmony between your roles as a homeschooling mom, a homemaker, and a woman seeking personal growth and spiritual fulfillment.
Remember, with the right tools and a steadfast commitment to your faith, you can absolutely balance homeschooling, home management, and self-care. So embrace the blessings of your time, and watch as your days become more productive, peaceful, and purposeful than ever before.
